Serhij Bohachuk Loses Majority decision to Vergil Ortiz, Jr. in Las Vegas

WBC Interim World Super welterweight champion Serhij Bohachuk (24-2, 23 KOs) lost by a 12 majority decision in a heated battle to former WBA Gold World Welterweight Champion Vergil Ortiz, Jr. ( 22-0, 21 KOs) on Saturday night at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

The 12-round fight, as thrilling as they come, left fans with mixed feelings about the decision.

In the first round, it was a slugfest, with Ortiz hitting the canvas for an 8-count from Referee Harvey Dock from a right on the side of Ortiz’s head. They picked up where they left off in the second round, throwing bombs. Ortiz had a small cut on the bridge of his nose halfway through the round, each winning a round. In the third round, the war continued again without a break in the action.

From the fourth through the seventh round, it was back and forth in a continued war. In the eighth round, a left hook from Bohachuk made Ortiz drop his gloves to the canvas, which referee Dock ruled a knockdown. Ortiz stormed back the rest of the round.

In the ninth round, the war continued, with Ortiz coming back well from the previous round knockdown. In the tenth round, Ortiz used an effective jab between bombs to take the round.

In the eleventh round, Ortiz had Bohachuk out on his feet until the final minute, when Bohachuk landed several punches to the chin, only to have Ortiz come back even stronger. In the twelfth and final round, it went back and forth, with Ortiz having a flight edge and Bohachuk hurt in the first minute.

Scores 113-113, 114-112 and 114-112.

In the co-feature event, 2016 Olympian, IBF USBA, and WBC USA champion super welterweight Charles ‘Bad News’ Conwell (20-0, 15 KOs) knocked out New England champion Khiary ‘King TooSharp’ Gray (18-7, 13 KOs) at 2:32 of the second round of a 10.

In the second round, a vicious left hook from Conwell to the body dropped Gray for the count from Referee Alan Huggins.

Super lightweight Kenneth ‘Bossman’ Sims, Jr. (21-2-1, 8 KOs) stopped a game against Jair ‘Kaiser’ Valtierra (17-4 (9 KOs), after five rounds of a 10.

In the first two rounds, Sims outlanded Valtierra. In the third round, Sims dealt out vicious bodywork, having Valtierra against the ropes when he suddenly countered with a combination. At the end of the round, Sims had Valtierra in trouble.

In the fourth round, Sims landed a flurry of punches in the final minute, putting Valtierra against the ropes. In the fifth round, Simms dealt out plenty of punishment, putting Valtierra against the ropes, who fought back but was outgunned. At the end of the round, Valtierra’s corner called a halt to referee Robert Hoyle.

IBF World Flyweight champ southpaw Gabriela ‘Sweet Poison’ Fundora, 14-0, 6 KOs) won a ten-round unanimous decision against No. 6 ranked former WBC Silver Bantamweight champ Daniela ‘La Leona’ Asenjo (16-4-3, 2 KOs).

In the first three rounds, the taller southpaw Fundora dominated both. In the fourth round, Asenjo got in several rights to the chin, though Fundora outlanded her, taking the round.

In the sixth round, Fundora kept punching down with right hooks to the body of Asenjo. In the eighth round, Fundora kept up the pressure, outworking Asenjo.

In the ninth round, Fundora drew blood from the nose of Asenjo. In the tenth and final round, Fundora dominated the game against Asenjo, who could go the distance.

The referee was Alan Huggins. Scores 100-90 by all judges.

Welter Joel Iriarte (4-0, 4 KOs) stopped Miguel Ortiz (3-2, 1 KOs) at 2:15 of the first round of a 6.

In the first round, 17-time amateur champ Iriarte came out firing punches. Halfway through the round, he rocked Ortiz with a left to the chin. In the final minute, a flurry of punches from Iriarte caused Referee Mike Ortega to call a halt.

Former unified World Welterweight champ Cecilia ‘First Lady’ Braekhus (38-2-1, 9 KOs) defeated game Maricela ‘La Diva’ Cornejo (19-7, 7 KOs) over 10×2 solid rounds.

Braekhus backed up Cornejo using a double jab to control the rounds in the first two rounds. In the fourth round final seconds, Braekhus dropped Cornejo with a right on the chin for an 8-count from Referee Robert Hoyle. In the fifth round, Cornejo came back well, holding her own in a close round.

In the sixth round’s final minute, Braekhus rocked Cornejo with a combination to the chin. In the eighth round, Braekhus used uppercuts to the chin, taking another round. In the ninth round, Braekhus outworked a game, Cornejo. In the tenth and final round, Braekhus kept up the pressure, outworking Cornejo.

Scores 96-93, 96-93 and 96-93.

Middleweight Eric Priest, 14-0, 8 KOs) defeated Luka Lozo (9-3-1, 8 KOs) by a ten-round decision.

In the first three rounds, Priest outlanded Lozo, taking all rounds. In the fourth round, Priest landed rights to Lozo’s chin throughout the round. In the fifth round, a right from Priest in the final minute drew blood from Lozo’s nose.

In the seventh round’s final minute, Priest had Lozo gasping for air from body shots. In the eighth round, Priest had Lozo bleeding from the nose and mouth with a small cut on the left eyebrow. Lozo hung in there in the tenth and final round, losing the round but going the distance.

The referee was Mike Vega. The scores were 100-90, 100-90, and 100-90.

Light Jonathan ‘Johnny’ Canas (5-0, 2 KO) defeated Joseph ‘Jaguar’ Cruz over four rounds.

In the third round, Cruz was cut over the left eye. In the fourth round, Canas dominated.

Referee Alan Huggins. Scores 40-36, 40-36 and 40-36.

Bantam southpaw Jordan Fuentes (1-0) won a hard-fought decision over James ‘El Perro’ Mulder (0-3 (0) 4 rounds.

In the first round, the 18-year-old Fuentes went to the body having an edge, but Mulder, who came in 5 lbs heavy, going from orthodox to southpaw, drew blood from the mouth of Fuentes with a lead right.

In the second and third rounds, there were another good two rounds from both. In the fourth and final round, after a minute, Fuentes landed a good body shot. Halfway through the round, Mulder landed a good right on Fuentes’ chin. It was a solid action fight, with all the rounds being competitive.

Referee Harvey Dock. Scores 39-37 twice and 37-36.

Welterweight Jennah Creason (1-0) was defeated by a split decision over southpaw Kelsey Wickstrum (2-2, 1 KO) of Redding, CA, over 4×2 rounds.
