Hatton thinks Canelo will KO Khan

alvarez434By Scott Gilfoid: Former Saul “Canelo” Alvarez victim Matthew Hatton doesn’t like Amir Khan’s chances of winning against Canelo on May 7. Hatton took a pounding by Canelo five years ago in losing a 12 round unanimous decision, and it wasn’t a pretty fight.

Hatton was given a royal thrashing by Canelo in a fight that begged for someone in Hatton’s corner to throw in the towel to save him. Hatton is no longer fighting now, and he does not Khan’s chances of beating Canelo. Hatton thinks Khan will do okay in the early rounds, but once Canelo starts landing his big shots at some point, Hatton sees Khan folding up.

“I can’t look past a knockout sooner or later for Alvarez,” Hatton said to ESPN.com. “Amir looks a lot better at welterweight and he sticks to a game plan, he has got better with Virgil Hunter, but he’s certainly not going to have been hit as hard before as anything like he will be on May 7.”

canelo955By Dan Ambrose: The now retired Matthew Hatton, the brother of former two division world champion Ricky Hatton, thinks that WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) will ultimately be too big for Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) to handle in their fight on May 7.

Hatton thinks the catch-weight of 155lbs won’t be of much help to the 29-year-old Khan because after Canelo rehydrates, he’ll have a big weight advantage over Khan and he’ll use the weight to batter him.

Matthew Hatton thinks Kell Brook will beat Porter

brook45453By Scott Gilfoid: Former Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs) victim Matthew Hatton is picking Brook to beat IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs) this Saturday night in their fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Hatton likes Kell’s talent, and he sees him as being fully ready to beat Porter in front of his own fans in Carson. Brook will be a long way from the UK on Saturday night, and there’s likely going to be few cheers for him in this fight. Brook is used to his fans adoring him and screaming like mad each time he throws a shot.

Matthew Macklin to fight on August 30th on Andy Lee card in Dublin

macklin534By Scott Gilfoid: Former two time world title challenger Matthew Macklin (30-5, 20 KO’s) will be back in the ring on August 30th in Dublin, Ireland against an opponent still to be determined.

This could be a possible warmup fight for the 32-year-old Macklin to face #4 WBC junior middleweight contender Andy Lee (33-2, 23 KO’s) in November, as Eddie Hearn from Matchroom Sport is said to be interested in putting this fight together. If so, this domestic level clash would be similar to the fight that Hearn plans on putting together later this year between Tony Bellew and Nathan Cleverly in the cruiserweight division.

Van Heerden defeats Hatton

By Scott Gilfoid: Making his second defense of his IBO welterweight title, champion Chris van Heerden (19-1, 10 KO’s) defeated Matthew Hatton (43-7-2, 17 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Sandton Convention Center, in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. The final judges’ scores were 118-110, 117-112 and 116-112.

Matthew Hatton vs. Chris van Heerden on Saturday, March 2nd in Johannesburg

hatton24355By Scott Gilfoid: This Saturday night, Matthew Hatton (43-6-2, 17 KO’s) will be challenging IBO welterweight champion Chris van Heerden (18-1-1, 10 KO’s) at the Sandton Convention Center, in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa.

Both of these guys are what you would call classic fringe level welterweights. Van Heerden, 25, is the younger guy with a better resume compared to the 31-year-old Hatton. Van Heerden, #11 IBF, will have the home advantage in this fight, as well as the advantage in speed, power and overall talent.

Hatton, #14 IBF, will have to fight a lot better than he did last year against Kell Brook. Hatton was easily beaten by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision, and was never competitive even for an instant. Hatton came back from that loss to beat an over-matched Michael Lomax by a 1st round knockout last October.

hatton-matthew44By Scott Gilfoid: Former European Boxing Union (EBU) welterweight champion Matthew Hatton (43-6-2, 17 KO’s) is already looking past his March 2nd fight against International Boxing Organization (IBO) welterweight champion Chris van Heerden (18-1-1, 10 KO’s) in South Africa towards a hoped for fight against either WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi or former WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko.

Hatton, #14 IBF, likes his chances against both of those guys for some reason. Hatton especially wants to fight Senchenko so that he can get revenge for Senchenko whipping his brother Ricky Hatton last year in a 9th round TKO win last November.

hatton-matthew44By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Hatton (43-6-2, 17 KO’s) was recently beaten by Kell Brook in March of 2012 in a mostly one-sided 12 round unanimous decision loss that was boring to watch due to the one-sided nature of the fight. Now it looks like the 31-year-old Hatton will be receiving another beating this time against IBO welterweight champion Chris van Heerden (18-1-1, 10 KO’s) on March 2nd in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa.

Hatton wants to try and capture the IBO strap so that he can use this to eventually get a title shot. However, he doesn’t have the skills or the power to beat the 25-year-old southpaw van Heerden, even though he’s not that great of a fighter either when you think about it.

The 31-year-old Hatton put the light hitting Lomax down with a right to the body and the fight was then halted at 1:24 of the round by referee Steve Gray.
