Tszyu says Kovalev must learn from Ward fight

By Chris Williams: Former light welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu saw former IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev’s loss to Andre Ward (31-0, 15 KOs) last Saturday night, and he feels that Kovalev failed to do what he needed to do in order to get the victory.

Kovalev was fighting an American Olympic gold medalist in his own country and he should have done what he needed to in order to get the victory. Tszyu says that instead of blaming the judges for not getting the victory, Kovalev needs to look at what he failed to do right so that he can learn from it rather than repeating the same mistakes in the rematch.

One thing that Kovalev failed to do was fight on the inside. Once Ward realized that Kovalev had no intentions of trying to fight him in close, he made it a point to force him to fight in that manner. This meant that Kovalev had to waste valuable energy grabbing Ward to keep him from getting his shots off. It’s harder to hold someone down than it is for a fighter who is trying to get his shots off.

Kostya Tszyu – Thunderstorm, or Drizzle?

tszyu64568By Bradley Dee: Every once in a while in boxing comes a special figure, a brighter burning light, a talent with unique abilities, and one of those was Kostya Tszyu. Known aptly as “The Thunder from Down Under”, Kostya possessed incredible boxing ability, as well as vaunted power in both hands. For a sample of the talent of this man, check out his fight against Vernon Forrest in the amateurs from 1991. Tszyu defeated Forrest in the finals to win the light welterweight Gold.

Tearing through opponents became the norm until 1997 when Superman met his Kryptonite labeled as Vince Phillips. Phillips, very much in the fight and winning on one scorecard, TKOd Tszyu in round 10. Phillips hit Tszyu with a couple of huge right hands, hurting him over and over, then finishing him off with 3 or 4 unanswered right hands.

So although I am not a writer who usually considers hypothetical match ups, it got me thinking about who would be my ultimate super-six fighter to go at it in a tournament throughout the weight classes. And I decided to start of with my favourite weight class, the Light-Welterweights. These fighters from recent era’s are all included due to the fact I think they would give great entertainment, even though some of them may not have the expected record of a ultimate fighter (such as Micky Ward). Would Hatton have beaten Tszyu on neutral ground?

By Scott Gilfoid: I recently watched the June 2005 bout between Ricky Hatton and then IBF light welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu, and I came away from the fight firmly believing that Tszyu would have beaten Hatton had this fight taken place on neutral territory rather than at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, England. Hatton was 26 at the time, and in the prime of his career, well before his one-sided losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

It would take one of those fighters for the 40-year-old Tszyu to whip himself in shape for what would likely be his biggest payday of his career. Tszyu hasn’t fought in over five years since being stopped in the 11th round by a young Ricky Hatton in June 2005.
