It’s now confirmed that Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) will defend his WBA 140-lb title against Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) on April 20th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The event will be shown live on DAZN PPV.
Ryan’s Mystery Teammate – Could It Be… Floyd?
Ryan posted on X, saying he’s got a “new teammate” for the New York press conference, making boxing fans wonder if he’s digging out the fossilized Floyd Mayweather Jr. from mothballs to help build interest for his fight with Haney.
Could Floyd be the secret weapon that can crack the Haney code? Some believe that Haney is Mayweather clone, the knockoff version of the original. Granted, Haney is far from a chip off the old block, but he’s trying with his limited physical tools. He has a lot less to work with than ‘Money,’ but he’s gotten this far.
Haney Goes for the Jugular
“You listen up, and you listen good. April 20th is all smoke. It’s Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia at the Barclays Center, and it’s going to be a bloodbath just like this red light,” said Bill Haney on X, announcing the location and venue of the fight between WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia on April 20th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
This is an excellent venue for the Haney-Garcia fight, as it’s more neutral territory than if they had staged the fight in Las Vegas, the adopted home of Haney, or in Southern California, where Ryan is from.
It wouldn’t have been fair to stage the fight in either of the locations, seeing that the fans would be slanting for one of the two fighters. You know how judges are when they hear crowd applause for one fighter. Their scoring ends up slanted toward the fighter who is being given all the cheering from fans.
Addressing Team Garcia’s Rumored Hire
“Team Garcia, we heard you have a new teammate for the press conference, but you best believe Devin Haney and Team Haney is going to be ready.”
I have a surprise for NY during the press conference… a new teammate
