Promoter Oscar De La Hoya says a fight between Ryan Garcia and former WBC & WBO light welterweight champion Jose Ramirez is “getting close to happening.”
Some fans believe that is another example of De La Hoya trying to get Ryan beat by feeding him to Ramirez, who is far more skilled and experienced.
This is an apex predator that De La Hoya wants to throw Ryan in with, and you can argue he’s not ready for this kind of hungry beast.
A Step Up in Class
It’s unclear how many more fights Ryan has on his contract with Golden Boy, but putting him in with Ramirez is a good way of seeing him beaten soundly before he leaves. Kingry hasn’t fought anyone from the 140-lb division, so this is a formidable initiation opponent.
You can’t count Ryan’s last opponent, Oscar Duarte, because he picked out from the 135-lb weight class from near the bottom.
Ryan has never shown the talent that would suggest he could beat someone like Ramirez. But if he can’t beat the 31-year-old Ramirez, that indicates that he would stand no chance against the other top fighters at 140, like Devin Haney, Subriel Matias, and Teofimo Lopez.
This is a big step up for Ryan from most of the opponents that he’s been facing during his career, apart from Gervonta Davis, so hopefully, he knows what he’s getting himself into.
Ramirez: No Joke
The 2012 U.S Olympian Ramirez (28-1, 18 KOs) is not someone to mess around with. If Ryan fights as he did in his last contest against Oscar Duarte on December 2nd, Ramirez will destroy him and do it quickly and efficiently like a baby T-Rex.
Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) is working on his third opponent after fights against Devin Haney and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero failed to take place.
De La Hoya says WBA 140-lb champion Rolly “priced himself out,” which is surprising because he seemed like he really wanted the fight with Ryan.
Rolly has got to be depressed about now, having lost out on the Ryan Garcia fight for the second time. He looked like a kid who had just gotten a new tricycle for Christmas when Ryan decided recently that he wanted to use him as his next opponent.
Looking like @RyanGarcia vs jose Ramirez is getting close and happening.
