PBC has made it official today for their Amazon Prime Video PPV card with unbeaten junior middleweight Tim Tszyu fighting Keith Thurman in a 155-lb catchweight in the main event on March 30th. No price was listed for the PPV event, though, leaving fans to question whether this will be in the $70 or $100 range, which could break the bank for many people.
Thurman (30-1, 22 KOs) is being dragged out of his mothballs to get the non-title main event fight as the B-side opponent for the unbeaten growing star, Tszyu (24-0, 17 KOs).
Initially, this was supposed to be for Tszyu’s WBO junior middleweight title, but the World Boxing Organization rejected that idea. There’s no reason given, but it’s believed because Thurman was not ranked in the 154-lb division, never fought in that weight class before as a professional, and came off a 25-month layoff.
The 35-year-old Thurman is a classic example of a fighter who has no business competing for a world title at 154 and, while we’re at it, competing against a talent like Tszyu. This fight has mismatch written all over it, and this likely won’t end well for the 5’7″ Thurman. He’s food for Tszyu.
Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero vs. Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz
Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (15-1, 13 KOs) is being given the prestigious co-feature assignment, defending against 135-pounder Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz (25-2-1, 17 KOs).
Although Pitbull doesn’t deserve to fight for a world title as much as Thurman, he’s at least ranked #1 with the WBA in the division below Rolly at 135, and he’s still an active fighter. He’s not coming off a 2+ year layoff, looking to fight for a world title.
It’s still troubling that the WBA is sanctioning Rolly-Cruz for a title defense at 140, given that Rolly is coming off a 10-month layoff, and he’s choosing to fight an opponent picked out from the lightweight division to help him increase his chances of holding onto his WBA light welterweight belt.
Under those circumstances, the WBA should strip Rolly after giving him the option of defending against his mandatory Ismael Barroso or losing the belt. I guess Rolly would give up the belt because Barroso is all wrong for him, and he knows it.
“I’m gonna stay world champ and be the first superstar on Prime Video,” said Rolly.
